ANY QUESTIONS?

Merilyn Hill
Director, Career Portfolio

I am close to retirement. How can make this transition work for me?

It's only natural to wonder what you'll do once you retire or as you move towards retirement. Today's baby boomers are keen to embrace their 20-plus retirement years with meaningful work, relationship and lifestyle activities, and by putting to best use their time, money and talents.

The challenge is that for many boomers, their jobs have moulded them. They have often had busy careers, and as they move out of full-time work, questions of self-identity can arise.

The best way to prepare is with a purposeful life plan, realigning the key elements of time, money and talents in a way that offers a fulfilling future focus. That way you know you'll be living by choice, not by chance.

Before or during this transition to this next stage of your life, reassess and refocus who you are and what you have to offer. You can do this by looking at your talents, values and vision. Years of being focused on a particular job or role, for example, can mean transferable abilities are blurred, so objectively asses what you can and can't do, and which of your skills shine.

You might want to move to part-time or voluntary work, or set up your own business.

This is also the time to reassess and integrate changing relationship and family dynamics and needs, your ideal work/activity involvemnets, and lifestyle hopes such as travel and wellbeing.
